    A Brief History of Peace

Throughout the last million or so years of human history, that is to say after the first million or so, people continued to believe that there could be peace on Earth and that there could be freedom. Neither happened or could have happened. They didn’t realize that violence was a law of the universe. They should have known it, watching the stars collide with their high resolution space telescopes that saw far into the past. After the first peace-belief, the wars continued. There was never a time on Earth when there wasn’t a war of some kind happening somewhere, people fighting people for this or that. Some of the wars were small, but others were very big wars, encompassing the whole planet, and there were very many of those, ten thousand big wars according to the final count. Over time, the wars wore down the people to the point that there weren’t actually many left. The last war, in fact, left only a few, but they kept on fighting. The starships were long gone. No more could be built. In the last battle, there were only two people left. One was a man and one was a woman. Each had a weapon pointed at each other. They knew they were the only two people left on Earth after all the wars. They realized that if one killed the other it would be the end of the species, and if they both killed each other the result would be the same. Peace among humans finally came in an embrace. And it all began again.
